30 SECONDS TO MARS LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Friday night at the AO arena finally saw the rescheduled long awaited (by some) 30 Seconds to Mars gig. Despite poor ticket sales, fans still queued up early to grab their place at the barrier and hopefully get a good view of the Leto brothers in all their glory.

The entrance was fairly cringeworthy, instead of walking on stage like most bands from behind the set, the band decided to walk from the back of the arena (which took fucking ages) and due to the arena feeling fairly empty, didn’t really have the desired effect. After high fiving what seemed like most of the audience, the band finally arrived on stage and began the gig.

The most interesting part of the evening was Jared Leto’s outfit. At times during some of his ‘dances’ (not sure legitimate dancers would class them as that) it reminded me of that moment of pure panic when you get the duvet into all but one corner and become entrapped/matador post bull fight/Jesus.

The music was ok, but it just seemed like they struggled to fill the vast stage (it was an extender) with a massive walk way, with Jared running around like a headless chicken in order to fill the space. The fireworks and confetti canons detracted somewhat from the bizarre happenings on stage but the whole evening felt flat.

The band have written some excellent songs, but in this venue it just did not do them justice. I will always be a fan of Jared for his outstanding perfomance in Requiem for a Dream, but this evening was just a little disappointing, I know from the reaction of the audience that most seemed to enjoy it, but next time a smaller venue with less of the dancing would perhaps be more fitting, less gimmicks chaps, you don’t need them!
