DAVE MATTHEWS BAND LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

American jam band Dave Matthew’s returned back to Manchester after a lengthy hiatus from touring the UK. The band received a very warm welcome indeed at Manchester’s Apollo last night with fans travelling all over to catch this rare performance of one of the more notable 90’s US exports.

The band had no support, starting early and playing a mammoth set which saw them plough through their extensive back catalogue of hits. Unassuming and all about the music, the band were clearly enjoying every moment of the gig, taking their time to warm up as a group before acknowledging the patient audience who held banners declaring their love for the seven multi-instrumentalists spread out across the entire Apollo stage.

The band, well known for their ever changing line up are front of course by Dave Matthew’s who swaps from a 6 to a 12 string acoustic, kicking off the set list with ‘Grey Street’, followed by ‘When the World Ends’ and more interestingly a Peter Gabriel `cover mid set of ‘Sledgehammer’.

The crowd were treated to perhaps the most famous song ‘Ants Marching’ just before the encore in which the band played two further covers, ‘Rye Whisky’ by Tex Ritter and ‘All Along the Watchtower’ of course by Bob Dylan, the latter of which was well suited to Matthew’s vocals.

The hour and half set more than made up for the lack of support and really showed the band’s dedication to their UK fans, apologising at the start for being away for so long. The UK tour has come to an end, but the band are heading to Europe this evening, then continuing their tour stateside. Who knows when they will return but let’s hope it isn’t as long as last time before we see the ensemble on UK soil.
