JAMES LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

James returned to Manchester to play a sold out gig at the newest venue in town last week to 23,000 adoring fans. The band are once again touring the UK and never fail to draw in the people of Manchester (and beyond) on the Northern legs of their tours.

Razorlight were the support for the evening and certainly warmed up the audience with classic tracks, and some newer material too. I forgot how many well-know hits razor light produced, it was like they had never been away. As lead singer Johnny Borrell launched into ‘In The Morning’ a wave of nostalgia hit, and continued to do so with those memories of the mid 2000’s creeping back.

The band played a 45 minute set and the audience continued to grow as the band came to a close with undoubtably their most famous track ‘America’ which prompted a mass sing-a-long in this vast venue, which must be quite an impressive sight from the stage. The seats seemingly going back as far as then eye can see.

James must be one of the most hardworking bands in the industry, they simply never stop touring, and the fans appetite to see this group of talented musicians never seems to dwindle. Tim Booth was in fine voice as they kicked off the setlist with ‘Johnny Yen’ which was accompanied by a very impressive light show, with the Co-op flexing it’s big venue muscles here and perhaps putting some of that negativity to bed. The venue suited the band, allowing them space to perform, showcasing their individual talent.

Tim Booth is an incredibly generous front man, stepping aside regular so that others can shine. Saul played a beautiful violin solo, followed by Booth’s famous movement pieces which sees him contort into a variety of age defying positions, captivating the audience who cheered loudly as this wonderful collective of creativity.

The generous setlist was enhanced by a four track encore, (this band never leave fans disappointed) and ended with their iconic ‘Laid’ which no doubt got every audience member bashing along to that drum beat in unison. The band continue their UK tour and should you not yet have seen this band live, I urge you to do so…
