MICHAEL HEAD AND THE RED ELASTIC BAND LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester’s Gorilla played host yesterday evening to veteran singer songwriter Mick Head and his talented The Red Elastic Band. The venue was jam packed, even the upstairs balcony was buckling under the weight of gig goers eager to catch a glimpse of Mr Head who seemed genuinely humbled by this warm Manchester welcome.

This was my first visit to Gorilla since it re-opened earlier this year and I must say the sound quality seemed much clearer, which was lucky as we were witnessing one of Liverpool’s finest song writing exports and to quote my friend Chris “all kinds of brilliant – Streets of Kenny is one of the best songs written. Fact.”

The career spanning set included tracks from his earlier band work but a focus tonight was about the brand new album ‘Loophole’ the latest offering from The Red Elastic Band and the first since their 2022 release ‘Dear Scott’. The album has proved a hit with joyous tracks, beautiful guitar solos and the full sound we are listening to this evening featuring a stunning performance on trumpet by Martin Smith.

The audience lapped up every word and were well versed in singing along to the newer tracks. Head has a lovely warm interaction at one point, pointing out an audience member he recognised from the train station, showing his down to earth nature but with a self assured style that doesn’t require gimmicks.

The band are currently on tour throughout the UK and have a number of festival appearances lined up as well as a special homecoming gig in Liverpool on the 13th December. Check out the link below to catch them this summer!
