Whether it’s the great selection of booze on offer (enough to make me think twice about what I wanted) or the three stories to the bathroom, 33 Oldham Street truly is a great venue for every musician if you are a seasoned veteran or it’s a first gig and your testing the waters.
Norrisette opened, performing a fantastic set. Performing as a duet this evening they were not shy to introduce us to new music that will be very swiftly making it’s way into my Spotify Playlist. A bit of an acquired taste but really hit the nail on the head with me. The Music was powerful despite the drummer being absent.
The bass player clearly has a massive amount of talent working his way up and down the fretboard like he was playing a Guns n Roses solo just by himself. Accompanied by the Pianist who’s voice was so powerful I could feel it in my bones. The Music was loud but very detailed and you could clearly tell every note had been clearly crafted. I look forward to seeing them in the future as a full band with more music and more experience because they are worthy of going somewhere special.
Then the big guns came out. Tom Hingley, formerly of Oldham’s The Inspiral Carpets, immediately started loud and forceful, the high octane start perfectly matching the energy in the room. Instant communication with the overflowing, capacity crowd really gave us a feeling of the intimacy of this venue.
The driving drums powered along with the groovy bass lines and Toms incredible vocals made for a memorable performance. The keyboardist and guitarist were on point, with small licks and nuances really making certain points sound light and delicate whilst still energetic and vigorous.
Opening with the classic Commercial Rain then moving straight on to Joe to really get the crowd up and dancing was the perfect combination. With Tom stomping on the floor adding to the atmosphere and give the sense of all out chaos.
Saturn 5 will always go down as a hit for me and the crowd seemed to follow the trend. Everyone singing was a great scene, Tom’s dancing adding to the fact. A few more classics including This is how it feels and Two Worlds Collide were among some of the many bangers that the band and Tom played resulting in a truly special night.
A great shout out to We Are Manchester for a great night.
