Back in 2021, his debut album, ‘Fortune’s Favour’ established Ed Cosens as more than ‘Jon McClure’s sidekick’ in Reverend and The Makers. Already well respected as a writer, the album garnered praise from fans and music media alike and follow-up ‘Somewhere Between Light and Dark’ seems set to only increase the accolades coming Ed’s way.

Ed teamed up again with producer Dave Sanderson for ‘Somewhere Between Light and Dark’ and credits Dave for ‘guiding….. in the direction it went sonically and the feel it ended up with.’ ‘He pushed me out of my comfort zone…’ and the record is undoubtedly all the richer for this influence.

Of the record, Ed states ‘Without realising it at the start, I had begun to write an album that reflected how my life moves inexorably between dark and light. Some days I feel on top of the world, some days, even before I’ve opened my eyes, I know that I’m going to have to navigate the dark and battle to find my way to tomorrow…’ This would suggest quite a dark, possibly morose record but the record is far from that. The short opening track ‘Somewhere Between Dark and Light’ may be quite sombre but it really is the only dour part of the record.

Whether it’s the supremely uplifting ‘When I’m Done Running’ ‘Stay With Me’ ‘In The Light’ ‘Starts All Over’ ‘Here Comes The Rain’ or the sublimely beautiful ‘Tiny Boxes’ this is a record that gives the listener a sense of comfort, the feeling that, come what may, all will be good.

Ed calls out ‘Tiny Boxes’ as one of his favourites on the record. A piano-based love song to his family reflecting what being a father means to him. It’s a beauty of a love song, even more beautiful with the context Ed gives to the track.

It does feel like we’re being blessed this year with some great records and this collection of superbly crafted songs from Ed Cosens certainly does more than hold its own.
