‘A Magpie Came Today’ – is the newest release from Johnny Daukes’ recent album ‘This Is The Road’.

Johnny says themes of his music delve into themes of religion, fatherhood, politics, abuse, addiction, grief, and environmental collapse.

Inspiration is said to be drawn from Johnny’s influences from the likes of REM, Richard Thompson, Leonard Cohen, Elliott Smith, and Lou Reed. He began his artistic journey at sixteen, playing guitar and writing music before turning his attention to film and television.

The beginning of the track threw me off immediately, as it began with bird sounds and song, but it soon kicked in, a different start, I rate it. It then continues with a steady backing track with powerful guitar riffs and a good drumbeat you can nod your head to, the only issue with this for me is that it overpowers Johnny’s fantastic vocals.

Johnny has some great dulcet tones with a very good range and I feel like it’s getting drowned out by the track, which in itself is brilliant.

I enjoyed the way it slowed down towards the end, the echoed vocals worked a treat and helped with wrapping up the song and allowed Johnny to show off what he could do.

The lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt, the overall track is fantastic, I look forward to hearing what else Johnny can do.
