‘Joe’ is the newest single from Rotherham-based Lee McMahon (LPMC), if you don’t know of Lee already, get to know him, as this song, in a word, is fantastic.

Joe is formally of ‘The Tivoli’ fame, being described as ‘Chief Songsmith and Frontman’ – and is now branching out into his own style – which I’m already hooked on.

The song is straight in with a riff – which is an instant hook, with the rest of the backing track jumping in to mold what I can only describe as Indie-Jazz.

Generally, these are two genres I wouldn’t mix together, they’re both so powerful and have a great presence, however, with what Lee has done, I’m not mad about it.

However, let’s talk about Lee’s vocals, they are AMAZING – it’s giving that grunge-like feel without being too heavy and it compliments the lyrics and his backing track.

Just as you’re settling into the jazzy tones and Lee’s stunning vocals, he pauses and it leaves me with a tiny cliffhanger, usually, I’d HATE this, but it only kept my attention, which is a good thing.

The lyrics are easy to remember, a bit repetitive if anything but it’s backed up from the vocals, and possibly has a nod to Shed Seven with the lyric ‘Just keep on chasing rainbows’ – if this is a nod to an influence, it’s certainly not a bad one to have.

It does however, tell a story, and I like that – when you listen to the lyrics, it’s thought provoking and soaks into your head easily, I found myself singing along to a few lines after a couple of listens, a must-do if you want people to sing your songs back at gigs – which, no doubt they would.

Overall if you like a jazzy, funky backing track with a pulse of indie rushing through, this is the track for you, I look forward to what else LPMC has to offer.
