Babybird are back in town with Mr Jones under strict instructions to not talk between songs (a huge cry of disappointment emerges from the crowd at this announcement). Surely one of the most attractive parts of a Babybird gig is the ‘top bantz’ of Stephen Jones and his acidic tongue, self depreciating humour and on occasion controversial comments that have perhaps gotten him into trouble in other towns (not Manchester of course).
The reason behind this cull on conversation is due to a club night starting promptly after the show, not that this stops Steve from making plenty of witty observations. The band are on a UK tour despite Stephen insisting that each tour is their last. I doubt this as Danny, Luke and Steve have the most wonderful onstage chemistry that makes for beautiful music and camaraderie not often seen in bands these days.
The set list was a little different and the band were down to three members sans drummer, but it worked very well. Danny was on keys which added an electronic element to the evening, and we still got to hear the greats including ‘Unlovable’ – in my opinion one of the most fucking beautiful songs ever written, ‘Failed Suicide Club’ and of course ‘You’re Gorgeous’ – and this time Jones managed to get through the song without pulling too many faces and eye rolls.
The venue was rammed with fans, many of whom were clearly hardcore as they were singing along to every word. Throughout the performance, the band projected a bizarre array of footage mainly Jones getting up to all sorts in some kind of German expressionist nightmare, classic film footage mashed up with home videos and lots of face pulling and Jones cavorting in a fountain – all of which was nearly as entertaining as the set!
If you have not seen this band live I urge you to do so. It is a heartwarming experience that leaves me on a high for days. Check out where you can catch the band below as they head down south next week to complete their tour, and I bloody hope they return next year so I can get my fix!
