WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FANTASY ALBUMS WHERE MUSIC FANS ARE PUT TO THE TEST TO DECIPHER THEIR ULTIMATE COLLECTION

The rules are simple(ish): they can’t repeat an album, and to just make it that little bit more interesting they have to use the same track number from another album. For example, Track 1 could be the opening track of the incredible Stone Roses’ debut ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. Track 2 could be Blur’s ‘Song 2′ – you get the idea? – basically their favourite track 1, 2, 3 etc from 10 different albums.

Comedian Robin Morgan. Robin hosts the topical comedy panel show
‘What Just Happened?’ for BBC Radio Wales; he’s supported Adam Kay
and Sophie McCartney on their nationwide tours, and has written for shows such as
‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘The Weakest Link’ and ‘Bake Off: The Professional’s.
He’s also become somewhat of a favourite on ‘The News Quiz’ (BBC Radio 4),
appearing in an episode so popular that even the government complained about it. His latest 33-date national tour starts in August entitled ‘The Spark’.

“Quite a good opening song, isn’t it? This album came out just as I’d started learning to play bass guitar. Such a great riff for a skinny 13-year-old to head-bang to while his parents turned up Radio 4 to try and drown him out.”

“I have this album cover framed on my office wall – I adore this song. The lyrics are a beautiful love letter, the synths and beats sublime. However, can I be controversial and say sometimes, Occasionally I prefer the Iron & Wine cover version. I’m sorry Ben Gibbard. I’ve failed you.”

“The second gig I attended was Less Than Jake in Cardiff Students Union, in 2003 or 4, after the release of the album Anthem. I crowd-surfed for the first time at this gig – possibly the last time also? The whole album was pivotal to me, at a time when I was dipping and diving in different friendship groups – but this reminds me of a time when I felt like I belonged.“

“I love this song so much. My kids love this song. We scream it in the car with the windows down. In late 2022, I was working on a writing job in London, and one night I went to see Bleachers play Shepherds Bush Empire, on my own. It was one of the first gigs I’d been to post-Covid, and was something like a religious experience for me. This song popped. (Sorry for saying popped).”

“Back to Gibbard. Again, a beautiful love song, so poetic and hopeful despite being a bit dark. I could listen to it on repeat for hours. And sometimes do. It’s a good “driving home from a gig at 2am” kinda song.”

“We get it Robin, you watched a lot of The O.C. when you were a teenager. Christ alive. This was the first song my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Conor Oberst sounds almost in pain at what he’s feeling in this, but again, hopeful, knowing, happy. Again, another late night driving song. “Remember the time you drove all night / Just to meet me in the morning.” It’s gorgeous.”

7. ‘This Modern Love’ by Bloc Party

“It’s my favourite song on a very good album. The way it builds and builds – the final minute is brilliant, and then again, a beautiful hopeful crescendo about falling in love. “

“I performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2015 and my pre-show playlist was just Robyn tracks. Did anyone realise I’d chosen them because my name is Robin? No. But at least I had good music to listen to as the audience filtered in. This is an uplifting heart-breaking song. Takes a special artist to bring both of those things together.“

“I think I just love love songs. I love the riff in this, I love the drum fills, I love Hayley Williams vocals in the chorus, and to be honest, throughout. “I’m Still Into You” I think is on par with “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” in terms of a simple, honest, beautiful way of looking at relationships. “

“Back to the early 2000’s. Back to great basslines. This song is 8 minutes long, and the bassline is pretty much the same throughout. God bless my parents for letting me play the same thing, over and over again. This song closed off the blue album, which was my first introduction to Weezer. I love how calm it starts and how heavy it gets. The final three minutes is a mad journey to make it as epic as it can be – it sounds like friends in a rehearsal space, egging each other on to see how much they can build before it, yes, pops off. No apologies this time.”
