There is something that feels and sounds familiar to the opening acoustic guitar riff. The rich tone, the structure, the pattern. It’s catchy and upbeat but melancholic. It’s hard to put my finger on, but it is reminiscent of something I have heard before. This isn’t uncommon though, so certainly no marking down for it.
The song is called Faith and is the latest release from The Dead King Company. The artistic expression of Liverpools Nathan Carroll. Something new from the city of rich musical heritige.
The rich guitar tone is layered with a warm lead guitar and a deep string sound. The texture created with this is wonderful. So early into the song and already I can tell it’s going to be one of those that hits you deep musically.
Lyrically it resonates personally. It’s quite rare for me to relate to lyrics. Often I find a lot of lyrics Nonsensical, but every so often I hear song lyrics that really pull a string. I don’t know if it’s because recently I have been going on a bit of a personal journey where things have been tough at times, but the opening lines really captured how I have felt at times recently.
The line “We have to walk the line we have drawn, Faith will keep us safe, safe in the eye of the storm” especially got me in the feels and honestly sums up how I get through the dark times.
The vocals have a real sense of feeling. Delivered with minimal effort but to maximum effect. The backing vocals are sparse however optimally utilised, giving an extra layer of soul where it counts.
The same can be said about the lead guitar. Not overdone. It’s present in an almost call-and-response way throughout, but it lets the vocals breathe. The tone is warming, the playing is nicely understated. It’s so easy for a lead guitar to be too much for a track but this is just right. And the way it plays out the song is almost magical.
At no point do I feel that one part of the song is fighting other parts for prominence. It’s well-produced, well thought out and well-executed.
It has a simple beat that completes the soundscape wonderfully. Simplicity is key here. Less is more at times, and this is proof.
One thing that I’m not keen on in this track is the fade-out at the end. It’s fine if it is to be used as the final track on an album but I do think this song deserves a proper ending.
That is honestly the only negative thing I can say about this song. It’s simple, short, meaningful and beautiful. I will go as far as saying that this has to be my favourite new track of 2024 so far. Maybe that’s because of the personal resonance it has had with me, but is that not what we look for in music when it is something we are seeking solace in at our darkest times?
In my eyes, this would transpose well to a progressive trance/house track if it was picked up by a top-notch producer. The melody is there and would work well in synth form.
To The Dead King Company, a heartfelt thank you for giving me a new song I can turn to when I need to.
