Hull four-piece Backyard Casino are back with the raucous new track, Sweet Nothings. Their seventh release to date, they have not lost any of the thunder that they pack into their sound.

Once again brimming with energy, Sweet Nothings packs much more of a punch than the title might suggest. Screeching feedback builds into a thumping riff to set the scene for an indie anthem that has a real bite. The blend of more a more traditional indie sound with some heavier post-punk influences result in a middle ground of melodic-mayhem.

As with all of their releases, this one oozes a real self belief. Every element of Sweet Nothings is done with 100% enthusiasm, leaving them all battling for your attention while simultaneous complimenting each other. The swagger in their sound lifts it far above the sum of its parts, and give it an edge over many of its contemporaries.

What grabs you most though this tune though are McEwen’s vocals. They are unrelenting through the two-and-a-bit minutes. Its no mean feat that his voice has the power required to rip through the aggression of the instrumentals and come to the forefront. Not only this, but the within that power is a genuinely good voice, making it almost instantly memorable.

Sweet Nothing’s doesn’t particularly teach us anything we didn’t already know about Backyard Casino. What it does do tremendously if solidify their position as a definite one to watch if they can keep churning out tunes of this standard.
