Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
Q. What made you decide that music is a thing for you?
A. People would say to me back in school that I had the voice for music. I also love listening to music. Over the years as I got older, I began to investigate everything that went into making a song from the recording process to the beats to the videos. I liked the freedom of speech that came with writing music as it is a vocalization of thoughts. Music is a way for me to voice my life and voice the people around me. I want my music to make people feel, move, and think. I want my music to appeal to everyone, not just those who look like me.
Q. Introduce us to you and your musical history.
My first the first proper song I made was in my first year of college. I had recently turned 16 and I made it at a friend’s house big up Barney! It was called High Thoughts, and it was freestyle. We both put in a lot of effort in creating the song and I remember when he sent it to me as an audio, I was so gassed. I listened to it every day repeatedly for a couple of months. I never released it though. Since then, I have made a lot of music but only dropped a couple on streaming platforms. My most streamed song funnily enough is a freestyle called From the Heart.
Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?
I feel like right now im just taking time and strategizing in ways to put myself out there and do things differently. Im nowhere in terms of where I see myself when im fully established all in Gods timing.
What is the biggest thing you have learned from someone else in the industry?
The biggest thing I learned from someone in the industry is to experiment and to not overthink things. Sometimes in the booth I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I can repeat things repeatedly until I feel like I have it right. I sometimes tend to overthink lyrics like i shouldnt say this or i shouldnt put this there etc. Nevertheless I have faith in myself and my musical abilites.
Tell us two truths and a lie about you.
I don’t lie
Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….
Sometimes, Im somoene who likes to play devils advocate a lot so I always try to see things from both sides. There has been things done or said by famous people that i hear of and I sometimes think damn is it that deep or they didnt mean it like that. Neverless God knows my heart and his judgement is all that matters.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why?
I’m not too heavy into conspiracy theories as I feel like the constant search of the truth can really disturb your inner peace. Im someone who values and respects my mental health and my inner peace so I dont really need to go searching for the truth of others. But I try to make myself aware of things going on globally. I do definitely do think that sometimes things are not what they seem to be. Take from that what you want.
What was the worst experience on stage?
There was a time in year 11 during GCSE’s where there was a practical music exam where those who did music had to perform in front of a crowd full of parents and students hosted at the school. It was a music show that counted towards their GCSE. I didnt take music at school but those around me knew I liked music and I could recite lyrics etc. Two of my boys who were going to perform asked me to perform with them. I said yeah. The song we were going to cover was Samantha with Dave and J Hus.
This was I song I knew all the words to so I didn’t mind. I went home that day and brushed up on my knowledge. I came in next day confident as I knew the lyrics. Unfortunately I recieved news that the song cover had changed to 18 Hunna by Headie One and Dave which I wasnt so familiar with. I had to learn Headie Ones bit. Headie One has a flow that I believe not many can replicate so I will be lying if i say I didnt struggle to learn his bit. I was really struggling in terms of word timing to as he says words faster than others sometimes. This is something that obviously comes naturally to him and he makes it sound cold. Me on the other hand was not. Long story short, the music show takes place and I think me and my boys were on the last song. The mandem said we was good but I just think they were being nice. I think I forgot some of the words and was off timing wise at bits and yeah. Not my proudest moment ill be real.
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.
Umm I would say I appear as extroverted sometimes but deep down I know I’m a little bit introverted. I do like my own space sometimes and sometimes think like I dont wanna go out and socialise. But if you ask the mandem theyll tell you im the loudest person on the planet. Im also a big overthinker and I have stayed up night no sleep overthinking.
Whats your thoughts on Elon Musks contribution to the world?
Urm I aint too clued up about him but as long as he flies straight and does the right things who am I to judge him. Just another guy doing his ting to me
Tell me us about your new song Folklore
Erm it captures the topic of broken love and holding on to the past and stuff. My aim was to make a relaxing song that people could listen to and link their own experiences and thoughts with. The beat is very calming due to the slow pace of it. The saxophone and piano used are also beautiful. Me and my engineer Sho worked hard on it and I’m just happy that I had the opportunity to release it to the world.
What was the hardest thing in writing new tunes?
I think the hardest thing for me is creating the first line. The first line dictates your whole song and its often what people will judge your song of as it is immediate. I try to make my first lines interesting and captivating to avoid people just playing two seconds in then skipping. I can spent hours trying to come up with a first line.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Nah Im happy with what was shared to the world
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
New music coming soon keep your eyes peeled. Don J soon taking over this whole world. I might drop an ep/mixtape this year who knows. For now keep streaming Folklore and I love all of you supporting me.
